In Search of the Holy Grind

The gauntlet was thrown down by the two Dragon Masters, Earl Daytripper and Baron Eardstapper, and has been duly picked up by chivalrous knight on his shiny Elsworth steed, Brave Sir Rohan. Foolhardy Sir Rohan.

Gallant Sir Rohan of Detours Trails has accepted the challenge to follow the Spine of the Dragon route, end to end, and so become the Third Dragon Master inducted into the Order of the Spine of the Dragon. And not only that good readers, no, he is planning to reconsider some of our tracks in order to make them more mountain bike friendly and so improve the overall quality of the mountain biking experience.

He is currently putting together a motley bunch of gallant knights to accompany him on his quest, possibly with the back-up of his faithful wench Hand-maiden Sarah, She who hands out cold Cokes and Steri Stumpies when the going gets tough.

Steve Thomas (Earl Daytripper) and I completed the 3,500 trip from Beit Bridge to Cape Town in 52 days, which included five or six R&R days, as well as a four day drive-around southern Lesotho looking for a way out of the flood-swollen valleys (we went back and re-rode them, with gallant Sir Rohan in December last year – see Lesotho Revisited blog). Rohan plans to do it in 50 days or fewer.

We’ll keep you posted about this most noble quest and perchance you will even support the cause for which he is riding (more details of all that in a further epistle).

Verily, we beseech you.

Baron Eardstapper
